Will Fluter replace Java for Android Development?
Progressive Web Apps are growing and getting better by the day.
Ultimately, in my opinion, the days of real apps for anything other than possible games are numbered. Sure, there will still be companies that make native apps (there are still companies using FORTRAN), but they will diminish as time goes on.
It’s simply too easy to use web apps:
- No app store requirements.
- More convenient for users to install.
- Less risky for users to install.
- Users are already at your site and know how to use your site, why shouldn’t your app be your site?
The only downside to web apps is that they’ve never run at native speeds, and that will remain true. However, increasing hardware capabilities means that there will soon come a day that there is no perceived difference- indeed, on a higher-end device, it is quite possible to build a web app that does not feel any different than a native app right now and has almost the same feature set.
The only thing that made developers transition from the freedom and simplicity of the web to restrictive native apps was that difference in user experience, once that’s gone we won’t have anything left to anchor us.
